I led the product design for social posting at Uberall for 1.5 years. During this time, one of my main projects was the addition of a calendar view to the social posting product. Before this project, our users were only able to see their posts in list format, but a lot of them expressed the desire to see it in a calendar: This would enable them to keep an overview of when what content is scheduled to post to what platform. It's crucial for social media teams to plan out their content schedule based on time, adding this calendar closed a major gap in our social posting platform offering.
To begin, I worked closely with my product manager to understand all user needs and establish clear goals. We knew we wanted to follow common calendar patterns, to create a UI familiar to users. One of my tasks was (competitive) research, and looking at adjacent products, for example Google Calendar, Microsoft Outlook, and similar. For competitive research, I spent a lot of time analyzing Hootsuite and its features, since it was one product often mentioned by our users.
After the initital designs were created, we did quick user feedback sessions to uncover any usability issues. One challenge I had to solve during this project, was showing items in a calendar that were scheduled for a specific day and time, but that had no duration. That was one definite difference to other calendars. The way I solved this, was by having each post card the same height and integrate the timestamp on the card. This way none of the events indicate duration by varying heights.
